Private Treatment – Practice Policy on Prescribing

We have many NHS patients who request to see consultants privately, on occasion, this is followed by a request to prescribe medication you recommend, as an NHS script.

We have a prescribing policy that applies to all NHS prescriptions and as long as the prescription request falls within these recommendations, we will usually be happy to prescribe it. It may be helpful for you to be aware that:

• We prescribe generically except in the very specific cases associated with variations in bioavailability.
• We avoid using combined preparations and modified release preparations whenever possible.
• We follow local Area prescribing committee recommendations on prescribing and do not prescribe drugs out of protocol or licensed indication.
• We prescribe from a limited range of medications in any therapeutic class and prescribe on an evidence base, selecting the most cost effective out of equivalent preparations.

We would thus be grateful if you could wherever possible, recommend a drug therapeutic class rather than by name and also consider the cost effectiveness of any therapeutic intervention prior to prescription. Thank you for your cooperation and assistance in the management of our patients.

Anyone can arrange to see a consultant or other Professional Health Care provider privately. We recommend that if you are using medical insurance, you should check with the company first to see if the consultant is recognized on their list and whether or not your problem is currently covered by your policy.

PLEASE :

1. Telephone the hospital or consultant’s secretary to arrange the appointment.
2. Leave a message with the receptionist at the Paradise Road Practice 0208 940 2423 with the following details:

Name of Consultant

                   Name of Hospital 

                   Name of Appointment

3. Come and collect your referral letter from reception 3 working days later.

4. If the appointment is less that the minimum 3 working days from after your consultation with the doctor, or from when you give us the above information, please be aware that your letter may not be available for your appointment.
